HOW IT ALL BEGAN
Our story begins like all great millennial love stories do:
we were introduced by a mutual friend...
...named Tinder.
Will, in the middle of completing his MBA at Berkeley, and Olivia, living in the South Bay working at the San Jose Earthquakes, lived 49.5 miles away from each other -- a very unlikely match for a location-based dating app. Until a fateful night when Olivia went to an Oakland A's game.
Liv spent half the game swiping, searching for the love of her life between innings and cracker jacks. And then, in the bottom of the sixth, the internet matchmaking gods worked their magic -- we matched.
(Olivia is now the A’s biggest fan)
Fast-forward a week of back and forth texting and figuring out we both had a love for Virginia, soccer and bad puns, we decided to meet in San Francisco. Olivia likes to brag that it was her first and only Tinder date and that she's batting 1000.
We had such a great time that Olivia canceled what was to be her second-ever Tinder date, thought of our wedding hashtag (true story) and the rest, as they say, is history.
Will proposed to Olivia with his grandmother’s ring under the northern lights during a road-trip around Iceland.
After two and a half years of dating and weekend adventures, in February 2017 we went on our first big adventure together: a week-long road trip around Iceland.
The first five days were spectacular -- and wintry: Iceland saw more snow that February than it had in more than a century. We swam in hotsprings, raced in dogsleds, and took drone selfies ( like, so. many. #selfies) over waterfalls -- but we hadn’t seen the northern lights.
... Olivia started to wonder if her fresh manicure was for nothing. Will thought it was a little strange that Liv was insistent on brushing her hair and putting on fresh lip gloss every time they pulled off the road for a photo op.
As we checked into our hotel on the fifth night we were greeted by flyers warning of an impending snowstorm: more record snowfall was expected, roads around the country were closed, and flights were being cancelled days in advance.
... Will started to wonder if he'd need a back-up plan.
We’d asked the receptionist to wake us if the northern lights came out, and at 1am the phone rang.
... Liv didn't even have time to brush her hair.
We waded out in the snow with the entire night lit up by the aurora borealis. Will led Liv down a hill away from the hotel to have some space to ourselves. It was there that Will bent down on one knee and asked the question he’d been waiting to ask.
Very surprised (mainly because Will’s drone was nowhere in sight), Liv emphatically said yes (in a voice three octaves higher than Will had ever heard).
The storm hit a few hours later, stranding us for another day in a remote hotel with unlimited food and champagne. It was the perfect way to start our engagement.
